The Importance of Nutrition and Physical Education in Indiana Schools

The Problem

Implementing a health and wellness program into all school levels.

Indiana is the 5th highest state in the United States with obesity rates reaching 36.8% in adults and 15.6% of children in middle and high schools (SCB, 2022).

Schools do not stress the importance of nutrition or physical activity.

Students are not set up for a healthy life.

Missing breakfast negatively impacts the student's concentration and preference later in the day (Gandy et al., 2020)

Free food for students would set them up for success.

Many schools have the same fear for teaching sex education. However, abstinence-only teaching does not work (Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, 2017)

Students learn about nutrition and diets from several sources

-One friend can see another friend crash diet and join in.
