Hip Hop in the 80s "Golden Age of Hip Hop"

The Golden Age of Hip Hop refers to roughly the mid 80s-90s when hip hop was very popular.

Hip Hop touched upon many political and social issues focused on the African American experience of ghettos, gang life, drugs, black identity, poverty and racism. This era is known for freeing up of the manner in which rap music was written.

Hip Hop in the 90s

In the early 90s, producers began using audio editing software and digital effects to create new styles of alternative hip hop such as jazz rap.

Later in the 90s, rappers created a new style of socially-conscious hip hop when they began rapping about political and social issues.

The most successful styles of the 90s were the hardcore rap of New York and the gangsta rap and G-Funk of Los Angeles.

90s Hip Hop fashion

Hip-hop fashion was largely defined by oversized fits and long silhouettes. One reason cited for this is that many kids growing up poor in cities like New York, LA and Chicago would receive clothes as hand-me-downs from their older siblings.

Denim was also growing during this time, as well as big bold patterns.

The years from 2001 to 2006 were defined by collaborations and regional stars finally reaching the mainstream. Kanye West led the charge, rapping about both social issues and material success.

Hip Hop also expanded all over the world, and soon stuff like K-pop, trap, and reggaeton also hit the mainstream.

Did Hip-Hop die down?

Although hip-hop has not officially died down, the original hip hop is not as popular as it was back in the day.

New versions of hip hop, such as trap, and rap have become super popular, but hip hop itself has not been as popular.
