He was an American poet, actor, writer, and designer. The poet was born on July 4, 1898 in Washington DC, and he died on November 25, 1945. He studied at Howard University in Washington DC and was a member of the school’s theater group.
His poems, Africa, Negro Woman, and Transformation, show many different themes. For example, the main themes in Transformation are hope, and miracles. The themes of Negro Woman are, beauty and despair. And the themes of Africa are ancestry.
During his writing career he was associated with other major Harlem Renaissance figures such as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Bennett, and Countee Cullen. He was also published in a lot of popular magazines and journals and wrote many poems inspiring people during the time period.

His goal was to share everything through writing. He was using everything he had to create a movement that influenced many people in the Harlem Renaissance. He was praised at the University of NC and was remembered for making a difference with his poetry when he died.
