Patients with serious medical issues

BPAS Clinics

Most BPAS clinics are not located in hospitals so are without immediate access to tertiary care

Can you think of any problems with this for patients with serious medical issues?

Question

Specialist Placements (SP) are a dedicated support team dealing with complex medical cases and placement of patients in NHS hospitals

Specialist Placements

Referral route

To access this service, patients must have a consultation with BPAS first

Waiting time for consultation and subsequent hospital wait time can delay patients accessing treatment significantly

Problems

Vulnerable patients may have additional support needs

Safeguarding Patients

Our safeguarding team works to ensure vulnerable patients are protected from abuse or neglect

Safeguarding team

Patients who should be flagged to units as possibly requiring Safeguarding:

  • Mental health issues
  • Rape
  • Domestic abuse/violence
  • Sexual exploitation/child protection

  • Heart abnormalities
  • Spina Bifida
  • Anencephaly

Fetal Anomaly

Clients under 18 years of age

  • Clients age 13 or under must be safeguarded

  • All clients under 18 should be followed up if they cancel their appointment

  • Young clients can attend a consultation alone but may need an adult escort for treatment

Young Patients

Not all BPAS clinics can provide treatment for late gestation patients therefore less appointments available

Patients over 18 weeks gestation

What could be the problem with this for late gestation patients?
