The Texas V. Johnson case in the supreme court happened on June 21, 1989. The Issue happened in Dallas Texas in August, 1984.
The case, Texas v. Johnson happened because the 40th president, Ronald Reagan was elected. Johnson was mad and burnt a flag at the 1984 Republican National Convention was in Dallas, Texas.
Johnson was arrested and charged for violating a Texas statue.
A Texas court Tried him and found him guilty. Johnson argued that he had the 1st amendment to protect him because of symbolic speech but they didn't listen.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear his case.
The Supreme court was a 5-4 decision and Johnson won. Justice William Brennan agreed with Johnson saying that it was symbolic speech and he was expressing what he wanted to say. Plus, the majority said that it is very offensive, but said that the government could not discriminate in this manner based upon viewpoint.

The Texas v Johnson case helps people today see that they can show symbolic speech if they are unhappy about something. Even though burning a flag is disrespectful, it shows that it is allowed.
