Classroom Seating:

Can it Affect your GPA?

Research Question

Does where you sit in a class affect your GPA?

1

First

Subjects / Experimental units

Classmates

Explanatory variables

Quantitative/ Categorical?

  • Categorical
  • Where you sit

Treatments

Factor level(s)

  • the amount of people in a class ( class size )
  • how big the classroom actually is

Response Variables

Quantitative/ Categorical?

  • GPA
  • Quantitative

Explain how experimental design principles apply in this study

Describe the experimental design in words and/ or diagrams

3

  • Control: We are only testing high school students ( 11th and 12th grade)
  • Random Assignment: Select a random of students in different grade levels ( 11th and 12th) and ask their GPA as well as their seating in a classroom.
  • Replication: Survey/ ask multiple students in the experiment.
  • Get a "yes or no" from students

Any Blocking used ?

4

Fourth

  • A blocking factor is a factor used to create blocks; It is a variable that has an effect on an experimental outcome.

  • Blocking was used ; High school students and the different grade levels ( 11th and 12th)

Describe it

Blocking was used in our study because it lowers unexplained variability.

Why it was used

Any blinding used?

  • Blinding is the practice of not telling subjects whether they are receiving treatment.
  • Blinding? Yes; The students won't know what the experiment is. We're just asking them questions.

What concerns do you have about the design of the study?

5

Fifth

The concerns we have is if the randomized sample is going to be accurate.

What statistical analysis techniques are appropriate for this study?

  • Hypothesis testing
  • Collecting data ( making a chart of it)

6

Sixth

What conclusions can be drawn from the the study?

Whether a student's seat in a class setting reflects on their GPA .
