Personality Theories

B.F Skinner & Behaviorism

Many behaviorists would describe personality by explaining that we differ o our learning experiences meaning we gain different behaviors and personalities.

Behaviorist

  • Stressed
  • based on contingencies of reinforcement
  • rewarded/punished for certain behaviors
  • specify behavior and determine what causes it
  • changing personality

Carl Jung

Carl Jung, developed his own theory after disagreeing with Freud, he called it analytic psychology. Carl Jung's personality theory consisted of putting people in two categories, introverts and extroverts. He believed the human psyche had three parts, the ego, personal unconscious, and collective unconscious.

Maslow's Humanistic Theory

Carl Roger's Approach

Maslow explains humanists stress the ability to create and live by your own standards and perceptions.

His belief is all strive for self-actualization hence a self actualization.

Goal : To be full functioning

Self : Your image of who you are and how others react to you

  • Self Worth: what we think of our selves from our childhood
  • Self-image : How we see ourselves reflects how we act
  • Ideal Self: Who we would like to be

Humanistic

Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory

Social cognitive

  • declared that personality is gained by direct reinforcement and by observational learning
  • behavior is acquired by being exposed to everyday models.
  • Cognitive-Personal Factors including beliefs, roles, values.
  • actions (behaviors)
  • environmental factors
