Gene
The conflict is how Gene thinks about himself. He doesn't think very highly about himself, he thinks he isn't very smart. Sharon thinks he is very intelligent but Gene can't see that. In the end, he realizes that he has the potential.
The theme is friendship. Sharon and Gene are not the best of friends, they barely even know each other. Trying new things let him create new friendship.
Gene is a shy and closed person. He doesn't like sharing much about himself. When Sharon came to sit next to him, he wanted to feel invisible. He likes fitting in and doesn't like being noticed. He doesn't think very highly about himself unlike Sharon, who has much faith and hope in him.
Sharon is a very intelligent girl. She is in the high English class. She is kind and caring. According to Gene, she is very popular, even more popular than the cheerleaders. Sharon wants Gene to realize his potential, and for him to notice that he is actually quite smart.
The title "I Go Along" is referring to Gene going along with everyone else. When they raise their hands, he does too, even though he might not exactly agree with what they were saying. He wants to fit it, he doesn't want to be noticed or be different.
