So, What is POSSE??

  • Founded in 1989 by Deborah Bial, a Brandeis Alumna

"I wouldn't have dropped out if I had my Posse"

  • The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential
  • The Foundation extends to these students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—-Posses-—of 10 students.
  • The Foundation’s partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships.

\

Posse Scholars are persisting and graduating from college at a rate of 90%, significantly above the national average

Affording Posse

  • The Posse Scholarship is a 4-year, full-tuition scholarship.
  • It does not cover room, board or fees
  • Posse scholars are required to apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA, which often covers any remaining costs in the form of grants, loans and work-study
  • We require that all Drew Seniors apply for a minimum of 10 scholarships in addition to Posse to cover the entire cost of attendance

Where do we go from here?

4. Career Program

1. Recruitment & Dap

Posse plays an integral role in the professional development of our Scholars and Alumni by providing them with the tools and opportunities necessary to secure highly competitive and career-enhancing internships and jobs.

One of the ways Posse achieves this is by partnering with exceptional companies and organizations, both nationally and abroad.

Currently, Posse has more than 100 partner companies and organizations nationwide.

The Career Program has three core components:

  • The Internship Program
  • Career Services
  • The Alumni Network

2. Pre-Collegiate Training Program

3. Campus Program

  • Posse staff members visit each university four times a year for meetings with Posse Scholars, campus liaisons and mentors. Each mentor meets weekly with the Posse as a team and with each Scholar individually every two weeks during the first two years in college

  • In addition, Posse facilitates an annual weekend-long PossePlus Retreat attended by members of the larger student body, faculty and administration, with the goal of discussing an important campus issue identified by Posse Scholars

How does Posse identify and select its scholars?

From January to August of their senior year in high school, Posse Scholars meet weekly with staff trainers and their Posse peers for two-hour workshops.

The training program consists of workshops that address four areas:

  • Team building and group support
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Leadership and becoming an active agent of change on campus
  • Academic excellence

Application Process:

  • Complete the Common Application between your second and third round interviews
  • Your Counselor will have to send transcripts and other required materials
  • POSSE IS A BINDING EARLY DECISION APPLICATION PROCESS. If you are selected as a Posse Scholar, you are bound to attend that institution
  • A student can only apply to one college/university Early Decision
  • Research and explore partner institutions to identify match and fit

If you are invited to a third-round interview but truly aren't interested in pursuing Posse, you MUST notify your College Counselor to withdraw your application

The Dynamic Assessment Process (DAP) is Posse’s innovative approach to identifying exceptional students through non-traditional forums.

Three Phases of DAP:

1. A large group interview, consisting of approximately 100-150 students from greater-Altanta (AUGUST)

2. A 20-minute, one-on-one interview with Posse staff (SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER)

3. A final, large group interview, consisting of 20-25 students per college. Ten will be selected as Posse Scholars for each of Posse Atlanta's partner institutions (60 total) (Early-December)

What does this really mean for my College Application Process?

More than just money for college

Program Components:

1. Recruitment/DAP

2. Pre-Collegiate Training Program

3. Campus Program

4. Career Program

College campuses should reflect the increasingly diverse and multicultural makeup of this country, and should help cultivate tomorrow's leaders

  • To expand the pool from which top colleges and universities can recruit outstanding young leaders from diverse backgrounds.
  • To help these institutions build more interactive campus environments so that they can be more welcoming for people from all backgrounds.
  • To ensure that Posse Scholars persist in their academic studies and graduate so they can take on leadership positions in the workforce.
