I have a mother, father, and younger sister. My sister and I are 9 years apart so growing up I was so used to being alone and matured fast since I had a lot of older cousins. I think having a younger sister helped me balance out my playful, childish side and my role as a responsible, older figure. My parents taught me many lessons in life and I get to continue to grow as my own person along with their guidance. I also have many relatives on my mom's side that positively impacted my life.
I was born and raised in San Digeo. My mom's side of the family moved here from the Philippines. She then petitioned my dad so all my life, we lived in this city. All my mom's siblings live within 10 minutes away from each other and all the schools I've gone to are all close by as well. I enjoy living near the beach since I like to go with friends and family.
I have a small group of friends who I met throughout my school years. I'm still in touch with a lot of people from elementary and high school but I have three specific friends who heavily shaped me the way I am today. We like to go out for food and sweet drinks and have long talks at the beach. They're part of the reason to why I am comfortable with myself and always support me through good and bad times.
I'm currently in my third year at Southwestern College, majoring in child development. I started college when the pandemic first happened so I haven't been on campus. I chose to stay online since I think it's what's best for me at the moment due to my work schedule.
The elementary school that I currently work at is the same one I attended as a young child. My mom started working there when I was in 1st grade and up until now she's still there. I first started working there August 2021 as a noontime supervisor but hoping to be a behavior assistant soon. The idea that the people I work with being so close to my family and me is very comforting, especially since they constantly help me grow in a work environment.
Working at an elementary school helps me gain experience with working with children. As I'm taking child development classes, I get to apply what I'm learning to what I do at work. I'm having thoughts of being a teacher or possibly have a career focusing on children's behavior so being at the elementary school helps me decide what I really want to do in the future.
Though I work in the same place as my mom, her income along with my dad's, has been important to keeping our family financially stable. Both of my parents weren't able to finish college and ever since they started working in the US, they're providing so much for not only us but their own sides of the family.
Growing up, I've learned so much about the Filipino culture. I'm able to understand and speak Tagalog, I grew up eating Filipino dishes, and have certain beliefs. Over the years, I started to see how different our culture is to how people live in the US. I've learned to accept and appreciate my own culture over the years.
A debut is a celebration of a girl entering the adulthood at the age of 18. This is a traditional celebration that includes 18 roses where 18 men would hand a rose to the debutant then dance and 18 candles where 18 women would say a wish or speech to the debutant. I've always looked forward to my debut but unfortunately, I wasn't able to have one due to the pandemic.
The pandemic has affected a lot of my life, transitioning to college was difficult especially with a new learning style. First semester of college was the first time I've ever taken online classes so I had to adjust with trying to focus on my learning.
During the start of the pandemic, I got to learn more about myself since I got more time to myself rather than being surrounded by the people I'm normally with. There was a good and bad side to this because I got to reflect on how I am as a person but also wish I had more company.
