If king penguins disappear, the continent's entire ecosystem will be in danger. These birds are important predators and prey in the region's food chain. Scientists have put forward several proposals that, in theory, should help their population recover.
- Using EU Sentinel-2 satellites, scientists monitored the life activity of five colonies located in different parts of the coast. Satellite footage shows how the ice literally crumbled under the penguins. As a result, four of the five colonies almost completely lost their offspring.
For example, experts consider it necessary to limit access to colonies for tourists and researchers in order not to disturb the birds again and to minimize the likelihood of contamination of their habitats.
The tragedy with the death of 10 thousand birds occurred in November, when the chicks were not yet fully fledged.
- Researchers believe that if this trend continues, more than 80% of emperor penguin colonies will become extinct by 2100.
