The story

Rabbit- Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington is the true story of the escape of three young girls from a settlement school they were forced to attend in Australia, far away from their families and homes. The three girls, Molly, Daisy and Gracie were mandated to be transferred to a school for half-caste Aborigine children, to be educated. Before the first day of school, Molly decided that she and her two cousins must escape and get back home. They walked back to Jigalong, their home, 1600 kilometres across Western Australia, following the rabbit-proof fence. After a long, difficult and dangerous walk, the girls made it home to their families, who were very happy to have their daughters back home.

Molly

  • Molly has short black hair with big brown eyes and caramel coloured skin.
  • She´s a tall Aborigine girl, who is 15 years old.
  • She is characterised as strong, determined, resourceful, self reliant and brave.
  • She is very passionate about her culture and her family and respects her relatives and the elderly.
  • She likes to hunt animals, play with her cousins, cooking with her family, etc.

Daisy

Daisy, aged 8, is extremely loyal and will never leave anyone behind.

Throughout the journey home, Daisy is stoic and cooperative. When Gracie stops walking Daisy tries to pull her in the direction of the fence. This small gesture creates this feeling that she won’t give up on someone and will not leave them behind.

Gracie

  • She is Molly´s younger cousin and favourite playmate. She´s 10 years old.
  • Gracie is fearful and often complains throughout the escape from the school.

Mr. A. O. Neville

  • He is obviously known for being a leader because he is the chief protector of Western Australia.
  • Mr A.O Neville is portrayed as a very stern looking man. This angle of shot makes him look very scary and intimidating.
  • He is a very brisk character and we are given a bad first impression of him.
  • He seems very cold-hearted because he doesn’t see anything wrong in what he’s doing with the aboriginals.

Moodoo

  • He is a man caught between two cultures, he uses ancient Aboriginal skills but is paid by the whites to help enslave his own people.
  • He helps Mr. Neville to find and bring back the half-caste children who try to escape from the Moore River Native settlement.

Personal opinion

I really enjoyed reading the book. It´s a great story but a bit sad at the same time. I admire Molly for being such brave young girl and making it back home.
