AI

The future of mental health

Artificial Intelligence

Introduction

What is AI

-Artificial Intelligence are computer systems capable of performing human tasks

-In order to perform these tasks, these systems use machine learning algorithms.

-Because of machine learning, AI is able to improve itself without the input of a human

How does it work

How does it work

-In essence, AI uses deep learning algorithms to analyze data and respond to it

-Deep learning replicates neural networks by processing large amounts of data and then making predictions and decisions based on the data

Comparison of artificial intelligence and the brain

How is it similar to the brain

Similarities:

Both learn from experience, both capable of pattern recognition, both capable of decision making, both operate using neural networks

Differences:

AI is programmed while the brain is Tabula Rasa, the brain is more flexible (it can learn tasks that it was not originally capable of), the brain is currently also more energy effiecient

CNN vs BNN

Neural Networks

Both the Brain and Artificial Intelligence operate through Neural Networks

How can AI help us?

-Early Detection of Mental Illness

-Personalized Treatment Plans

-Virtual Therapy

(Still a long way to go)

How is it going to help

Current Uses

Uses

Currently, AI implementation in the medical field is somewhat limited by its capabilities, but some uses include:

-automating tasks, supporting clinicians, and help us deepen our understanding of complex disorders

There are still challenges, however, these include:

Limitations to knowledge of depression, schizophrenia, and "other psychotic disorders"

(This means that we really haven't cracked the surface)

Future Application

Early Detection of Mental Illness, Personalized Treatment Plans, Virtual Therapy are a few already mentioned applications

Some others include:

Predictive analysis and providing real time feedback on patient data to help formulate a diagnoses

It should be noted that this is still a long ways away and may be hindered due to ethical concerns

BrAIn

My Original Project

BrAIn was my original idea for this project, but I had to scrap it due to it being too ambitious of a project for my level of coding and timeframe

What is BrAIn?

Pronounced Brain-AI, my idea for this project was to create a rudimentary chatbot that could be used in the mental healthcare field as a supplement for practioners and their clients

How would it work?

BrAIn would work similarly to a diagnostic survey given before going into a doctor's appointment

The premise was that it would ask the clients leading questions and be able to provide the practioner with a summary of the client's state of mind

There was also going to be a feature in which the client could talk to the bot and it would be able to provide coping mechanisms and proper mental health resources

BrAIn was going to be based on the python NLTK model and be open source

Conclusion

In conclusion, what started off as a foray into artificial intelligence in the mental health field turned into an exploration of the cross-section between AI and its potential implications on mental health. I found that there are many...
