- Since Sung dynasty, people have been living in Tung Chung. Tung Chung was formerly a rural fishing village, along the delta and lower courses of Tung Chung River and Ma Wan Chung in the north-western coast of Lantau Island.

- During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tung Chung was an important defence stronghold against pirates and foreign military.

- Since 1990s to now, Tung Chung is a new town with population of 86,000 people.
