When coming to read about Alexander Graham Bell , he supported both genetics and oralism throughout his lifetime, the belief that Deaf people should be taught speech and lip-reading rather than sign language. Alexander Graham Bell's father, Melville Bell, created Visible Speech, a system of symbols that allows people to communicate in languages they can't hear, while his mother was deaf, and Alexander Graham Bell was invited to talk about it at the Clarke School in 1872. Soon after, he returned to Boston to open his own private Deaf school. Bell ultimately abandoned Visible Speech, but he demanded that Deaf individuals learn to speak in order to function professionally and socially. Bell's name became connected with oralism in the Deaf world.

Marlee Matlin is the most well-known deaf actress in Hollywood; she was the youngest person to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Children of a False God. When it was released in 1986, it was the first film to have a deaf actor in a leading role since the movie. Hollywood has overlooked the deaf films and movie stars for nearly 50 years. Matlin showed Hollywood that deafness doesn't mean a character can't be interesting to a hearing audience. Matlin, on the other hand, drew attention to the wide range of fascinating parts that deaf actors are capable of playing.
