energy efficient house

energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is reducing the amount of energy used, by using less energy to provide the same service. For example, LED lights use a lot less energy than incandescent light bulbs, which produce the same amount of light.

energy efficiency

benefits

benefits

  • Financial saving- structures have lower efficiency demands and have lower operating costs
  • Reduced carbon footprint- less greenhouse gas emissions
  • Environmental legislation- improved productivity
  • Security- more resources for future
  • Improves economy
  • Improves national security
  • Better control of temperature and more simplicity

negatives

  • Higher costs than if not efficient

negatives

materials

The materials that we used for the house are highly energy efficient and are affordable.

materials

walls

walls

  • Insulation inside the walls Keeps the heat inside the house. for our house to repreasent the insulation Foam peanuts was used.
  • Bricks were used for the walls of the house. we represented this with thin cardboard and brown paint.
  • Lightweight framing was used to build the foundation of the house.

Floor

floor

  • Concrete floor, was used for under the floor. A hole is dug into the ground, and then filled with a concrete slab, and then covered with timber, which is covered with carpet. this process Stops the heat from escaping into the ground.
  • Carpet was also used for the inside of the house, to stop the heat from escaping into the ground. this was represented with carpet
  • scraps.

roof

•Dark tiles on roof absorb heat from the sun and heat the house. we used thin cardboard to represent this for the house.

•Solar panels (used for the top of the roof). Absorb heat from the sun and uses it as a source for energy to generate electricity. we used shiny black thin cardboard and white-out to represent this in the house.

Insulation in the roof (bats), help stop heat escaping through the roof and ceiling.

doors and windows

doors and windows

  • Triple glazed glass, used for all the windows of the house. Keeps heat from seeping out and helps absorb heat from the outside.
  • Heavy curtains, used for the windows. (thin styrofoam and skewers.)
  • Sliding door, modern look and small, as to not loose heat from the glass. (thin plastic and straws.)
  • Thick doors (timber and steel). Stop heat from escaping through doors. (thin cardboard.)
