who was he?
Born as in North Vancouver, his English name was originally Dan Slaholt. The surname was changed to George when he entered a residential school at age 5. He worked at a number of different jobs, including as a longshoreman, construction worker, and school bus driver, and was band chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation from 1951 to 1963 (then called the Burrard Indian Band). let in the southeast area of the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada .

Chief Dan George is known for his outspokenness on Native issues and, importantly, for the way he spoke of them. His slow, powerful speaking voice was unforgettable, as were his renowned sayings, both legendary and visionary.
Though he was characterized and is best remembered as a stereotypical “Indian” he was, in real life, an ardent environmentalist, spiritual healer, promoter of traditional values, and spokesperson for Canada’s Native peoples.
Little Big Man, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; also for his role in The Outlaw Josey Wales, as Lone Watie, opposite Clint Eastwood.
During his acting career, Dan was promoting a better understanding of First Nation for any non aboriginal people.

Chief Dan George has impacted many lives through the art of movies, writing and has shown the traditional side of his culture. Over the past decades, the world has changed, some for the better and others for the worst. Even after passing, Geswanouth Slahoot has gotten two schools honoured to him and till this day is remembered for the amazing indigenous hero he was. People have made a soft spot for him and his beliefs. During his acting career, Dan was promoting a better understanding of First Nation for any non aboriginal people.
It was through acting, however, that he gained a voice for his poetry, and his advocacy of native interests. The road to Hollywood began with the TV series Cariboo Country-- a gig he began at 60 without any prior acting experience! This led to other parts and eventually to the role in Little Big Man that garnered him an Academy Award nomination. He went on to make numerous TV and movie appearances, including a memorable performance alongside Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales, and earned high critical praise for his work in the play, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe.
