This presentaion will cover the topic of The First Punic war. The war The first Punic war was primarily fought by the Romans and the Carthaginian but Carthage was helped by some other groups along the way.

The battle of Akragas was defended by a huge Carthage army but heavily defeated by the Romans. This would start the beginning of Rome's control of the island of Sicily.

The Romans built a naval fleet copying the design of a Carthage ship that wrecked on Roman shores. The Romans built their fleet in 60 days then inflicting several defeats on the Carthages.

The Romans launched an attack on Corsica

and took Carthages military base on the island. They then went on to try and fail to take a Carthage base on Sardinia.

The Romans then launched an attack on North Africa which the Carthages tried to stop. At the battle of Cape Ecnomus it was possibly the biggest naval battle of all time and they were defeated. The invasion went till 255 BC until the Carthages sued for peace but the conditions were too harsh so they fought on and the Romans were defeated. The Romans tried to retreat the rest of the soldiers that were still alive but they were intercepted by the Carthages. They were then defeated, and on Rome's way back they were caught in a storm killing 100 000 men and nearly taking out 200 ships.

The war continued, Carthage then went on to recapture Akragas but later decided that they could not defend it so they left it abandoned. The Romans recovered their naval fleet adding an additional 220 ships, they then went on to lose 150 ships in a storm the next year.

The Romans besieged 2 Carthaginian bases on Sicily and tried to launch a surprise attack on the Carthage fleet but were defeated.

Between 249-241 BC Carthage made attempts to recapture some of Sycily but they all failed. In 241 BC a treaty was then made and Rome got the island of Corsica and Sardinia.
