The Renaissance

Who was important in this time?

Who was important during this time?

Petrarch

Petrarch

Petrarch was a scholar and poet who brought light to humanist philosophies and ideas. He read classic literature and took inspiration from their ideas, and paired it to his own time. This helped begin the idea of the rebirth that the Renaissance was all about. He also had a passion for writing, which was a foundation for the modern Italian language.

Laura Cereta

Laura Cereta was born around 1469, and raised in a loving household. Her parents provided her with an education, and believed in her intelligence. She used this intelligence to write a collection of letters. Within these letters she provided a strong female voice, to stand up against all of the misogyny.

Why is this time period significant?

Why is this time period significant?

The renaissance was a time of rebirth for societies. For example there was the birth of humanism, where they believe in the goodness in humans, rather than divine beings (This was a huge change from the middle ages, where the government was run through religion). This idea sparked the goal of the renaissance, which was to bring out the beauty, truth, and wisdom in society. They attempted to accomplish this by creating an ideal architecture/environment, and investing in artists. The artists were able to symbolize what the renaissance was all about, and spoke to the people. During this time they began to look at things in a more real/scientific way. For example the idea of heliocentrism vs. geocentrism. This changed how the world is today, and began a revolution of new ideas.

The Printing Press

The printing press was invented in 1439, by Johannes Gutenberg. The printing press was important because it allowed for books to be published at a cheaper price. This meant that more could access books, and could learn how to read. It also meant that they were able to spread news at a much faster pace.

Heliocentric Ideas

Heliocentric ideas begin

Nicolaus Copernicus first expressed his ideas of the earth revolving around the sun in 1543. This discovery was revolutionary, and allowed for more future discoveries. It changed the way that scientists understand our solar system, and how they study it. More accurate astronomical tools were also made because of this discovery.

St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's basilica

Architecture within the renaissance was extremely important because it set a good environment for their society to be in. An important part of this architecture was St. Peter's Basilica. It was a huge church that was built on St. Peter's tomb. St. Peter's Basilica was built in 1506, and is now an example of the Renaissance's architectural style that the modern world can visit.

Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus was painted between 1485-1486 by Sandro Botticelli. This painting represented all of the ideas of the Renaissance. The rebirth, hope in humanity, and the cultural shift that took place was all symbolized in this painting. It displayed the ideas for people to take in, and get inspired from.

Scientific Revolution

The scientific revolution began in 1543, and resulted in many different things. Its largest impact however, was the questioning of the church's beliefs. They looked at it with a more truthful and scientific point of view. For example, they questioned the church's beliefs on a geocentric solar system.
