The IPDE Process
Driver Risk
Environmental Risk
- Identify: There is a deer crossing sign
- Predict: There will likely be deer jumping out into the road ahead
- Decide: I will slow down and make sure my headlights are on to increase visibility and reaction time
- Execute: Brake to slow down and ensure headlights are turned on
Vehicle Risk
- Identify: The temperature warning light of the vehicle is on
- Predict: This means that the engine is too hot to continue nominal function
- Decide: I must get to a point that allows the vehicle to cool down, on the shoulder
- Execute: Pull off and turn off the engine after stopping the car
Driver Risk
- Identify: I'm on my phone, with it off for some reason
- Predict: If I'm on my phone I won't be able to react to situations quickly and efficiently
- Decide: I should definitely put my phone away, get it out of my grubby hands
- Execute: Put my phone away
Environmental Risk (Again)
Misc. Risk #1
- Identify: There are pedestrians in the street
- Predict: If I don't slow down or stop, I'm going to hit them and get everybody into loads of trouble
- Decide: I'm definitely going to slow down and prepare to stop
- Execute: Pressure the brake
Vehicle Risk (Once More)
Misc. Risk #2
- Identify: My Emergency Brake light is on
- Predict: I'm not going to be able to go anywhere without doing big damage to my vehicle
- Decide: I'm going to take off my parking brake
- Execute: Pull the lever that releases the parking brake
