Sir Albert Howard

Howard's Contributions

Howard's Research

  • Albert Howard was an English botanist, who attended University of Cambridge.
  • Throughout Howard's career he spent most of his time doing research and teaching at numerous universities.
  • Howard spent multiple decades in India, where he tested his theories on organic farming.
  • Rather than using chemical based fertilizers, Howard discovered through composting and manures, he could create a nitrogen and nutrient rich soil.

Howard's Findings

After using the composting techniques, the Indore Research Farm recorded high crop yeilds, with little to no insect or disease concerns. Its also important to note the animals fed these crops were not getting cattle disease, which was very common at the time. Not only did Howard create a better crop, he created a healthier food suply.

Behind the Scientist

Behind the Scientist

  • The son of a farmer, Howard grew up around agriculture and plants.
  • Early in his career, Howard taught at Harrison College in Barbados.
  • While working at the goverment research farm in Indore, India, Howard worked along side Gabrielle Matthaei. The two went on to get married.
  • Howard learned about Indian soil, pests, and farming techniques from Indian peasants. The knowledge he learned then allowed him to begin conducting the studies on organic farming.

Why did I choose Albert Howard?

Significance

  • It is admirable to me that he created a way to produce crops without using harmful chemicals and techniques that could produce an unhealthy product to the consumer.
  • He demonstrated patience throughout his career, while staying consistent with doing what he loved. This is something I will definetly strive to accomplish.
  • I have always been very interested on the difference between organic food and non-organic food. I enjoyed learning about the foundation of organics.
