No one under the age of 18 can vote in any federal election.
This means kids can't vote for who is president.
What should the age be?
History
The 26th amendment started when:
The voting age used to be 21!
Fearing confusion as to who would be able to vote in the 1972 election, Congress quickly proposed and passed a constitutional amendment permantly lowering the voting age to 18.
Wanting to lower the voting age dates back to WWll. Roosevelt wanted to increase the size of the nations military and lowered the draft age from 21 to 18. The slogan was " Old enough to fight, old enough to vote."
On July 5th, 1971, President Richard Nixon signed the certified amendment, along with three selected 18 year olds as witnesses.
How does the 26th admendment
affect us?
You probably can't vote right now
but why?
Being under the age of 18 means you have no say in who becomes the president. Althought the president has a say in how kids lives are affected.
Established the minimum age requirement for voting in federal elections at eighteen years.
The voting age should be changed to 16 in most states. To be voting all people no matter what age must present a full understanding of what they are voting for or against by taking a test.
In my opinion I think that the voting age of 18, should be lowered to 16.
In theory, if you can drive a car and go out to interact with society on a daily basis, you need a say in what happens in day to day life.
