In this phase, technology is just a substitute. There is no functional change. Substitution occurs when technology takes the place of another method already being utilized in the classroom.

An example of substitution of technology in the classroom is the use of a Smartboard, rather than a chalkboard. You could write on a chalkboard. A Smartboard is like a whiteboard television.

Instead of having students complete a paper work sheet packet as review, I could create a Google doc (such as Google Classroom) that they can access and manipulate. This would help with familiarity with the device and the content of the assignment. They would still be completing the same review work, but using a device increases the potential for learning other skills simultaneously.

An example of redefinition in the classroom is using technology to create a lesson that would not be possible without it. If we were studying weekly weather patterns locally, we could use the internet to check weather around the world also. This would allow us to compare and contrast the weather patterns of different continents this week.
