Pre-Columbian America

Warm Up

Grab one or two buddies and discuss the following:

Warm Up

• Prior to European contact in North America, what was the continent like in terms of established societies, culture, and achievements?

• What does a complex society look to you? Who judges which societies are advanced and which are primitive? Whose stories typically get told in American history? Whose are forgotten or ignored?

• When you think of American history, what images and themes come to mind? When does American history begin?

Remember the timeline -- Consider how American civilizations compare to other ancient and medieval civilizations that you know about.

Just the facts

Pre-Columbian

What do you know about Pre-columbian civilizations?

Pre-Columbian

Cahokia

CAHOKIA was a pre-Columbian settlement, the largest city in North America north of Mexico, with as many as 20,000 people living there at its peak (1000-1200 CE). This is roughly an equal population to London during the same period.

But...

There were many large, cultured and dynamic pre-columbian societies, but they are de-emphasized in American history.

Reading

Academic skills

How can you identify a thesis statement? First, find the research question, such as "What is history for?" The thesis statement is the author's 'answer' to that question. The author should support that answer with evidence and show why it is a true and accurate answer.

The Big Question

Why should we study history at all?

The Big Question

What do you think?

Grab a partner and discuss the video. What was the author's thesis statement? Are you satisfied by the reasons given? Is there anything you would add or change?

Your turn!

Write your own thesis statement to answer the question: "What is history for?"
