What did the Earth look like?

The Continents

  • The Earth looked similar to the Ordovician. Most of the land was together as one big super continent, Gondwana.
  • There were six smaller continents surrounding Gonwana.
  • The land was fairly flat. There were not as many mountains as today.

Climate

Climate

  • The Silurian started out very cold from the Ice Age.
  • The Earth warmed quickly, melting the ice caps.
  • After the warming, the temperature was stable.

Life in the Silurian

Life

  • Most life was in the ocean.
  • Plants and animals that thrived during the Ice Age, were not suited for the warmer climate.
  • More life grew on land than during the Ordovician.
