What is Abortion?

Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy and is most often performed during the first 28 weeks. Abortions are normally carried out because the pregnancy was unwanted or threatened the mother’s life.

How Does Religion Affect People's Views on Abortion?

-Roman Catholics believe that life begins at conception and consider abortion to be murder

-Protestants believe that life begins after the first 14 days of pregnancy and that the embryo is a living human being from this point

-Some Buddhists also believe that abortion prevents the occurrence of rebirth

Why are Some People Against Abortion?

Many people are against abortion because they believe that:

-All life is sacred (every human being, including an embryo or foetus, has the right to live)

-It is not our place to take away an embryo’s right to its future.

-Abortion makes human life seem cheap and disposable

A Christian View on Abortion

Some Christians are against abortion because they believe that God takes time over designing every human life and making it unique and perfect, and that it would be wrong to let the love and effort that God put in go to waste. Others are for abortion because they believe that God gave humans free will, and therefore a pregnant woman should have the choice between having an abortion and keeping the child.

Why are Some People For Abortion?

People who are for abortion may believe that:

-A woman has the right to choose whether or not she wants to have the baby (it is her body)

-If the baby wasn’t wanted and accepted in the first place, it would never be given the love and affection that it needs, which can have a negative impact on the health of both the mother and the child

-Stopping legal abortions could result in a return of illegal and unprofessional abortions that can put the mother's health at risk
