Thesis Statement

An overall statement (thesis statement) in which you identify the character's main contributions to the impact and success of the movie as a whole.

Thesis Statement

-Mary Jackson was an African American woman who stood up for her rights.

-She doubted herself at first because it was not common for women to become engineers at that time.

- She also did not have many people that believed in her (her husband included).

-Her boss had pointed out to Mary that her abilities were needed in the field. He persuaded her into persuing her goal of becoming an engineer.

-Mary Jackson went to the judge and tried to get classes for herself at the all white male high school so she could learn how to become an engineer.

-Mary Jackson's character evolved into a greater person as she went on and faced more obstacles.

- Her husband became more aware of Mary's capabilities and believed in her abilities to become an engineer.

-Thankfully she was determined enough to become the first African American engineer.

  • Mary Jackson had many important relationships but all were equally influential.She was a mother,wife and a friend.
  • Even though her husband was not very supportive and worried a lot about her, he did not stop her from progressing in her career.
  • Later in the movie, he knelt down and proclaimed that she was a capable woman.
  • His absence might have created a sense of loneliness from not having support from her family.
  • Her boss was an important individual who persuaded her into breaking her limits and expanding her boundaries.
  • His absence could have created a ripple of life changing events where Mary settled for less.
  • Her friends supported her in every step of the way and believed that she was capable of becoming an engineer.
  • Their absence might have affected Mary because then she might not have kept on pursuing her dreams and goals.

  • Mary Jackson was an optimistic black woman who had many obstacles in her way.
  • Although she doubted her abilities at the beginning, during the course of the film we are able to see how her character grows throughout.
  • She learns not to doubt herself as much and believe in herself more.
  • One of the biggest obstacles for Mary was her uncertainty in becoming an engineer.
  • She convinced herself that a negro woman could not become one.
  • Her boss, friends, and family gave her inspiration and motivation to pursue her goal.
  • At the beginning, Mary's husband was doubtful she would be able to become an engineer.
  • He was not discouraging her but he did not believe in her, either. Later on, as Mary becomes more determined, he believes in her more and gives her encouragement.

-Her boss persuades her to pursue her goals. Her friends and family supported her through the tough times.

-Some of her are abilities include critical thinking, a strong work ethic, creativity and leadership.

-Mary was a critical thinker because when it came to the strenuous work she was always able to come up with a solution.

-She had a strong work ethic because she did not stop until the task was complete.

-She was creative because in order to come up with the solution to the problem with the spaceship she had to think outside of the box and be creative

-She also portrayed leadership because she was being a strong role model to her children.

  • Our responses towards Mary Jackson included that she was outgoing with what she wanted in her career
  • She would not stop what she was doing until she got what she wanted.
  • We saw her as a very independent person because she wanted to prove herself and others that she can do it.
  • Out of the three women, she was the one who would make a serious situation amusing.
  • We also were sympathetic towards her because it was hard to live in a time when people were segregated because of their skin color and gender.
  • She did not have as many rights and privileges as white men had.
