Manhattan Project National Historical Park

History of the park

What Is

It is one of the most game-changing events of the 20th century. This project started in the nuclear age with the creation of the world's first atomic bomb. The building of this atomic bomb started in 1942 in three secret location across the nation. This is one park with three different sites.

What Is

Atomic Bomb

Hanford, WA

The site in Hanford, WA built the world’s first nuclear production reactors that produced the plutonium used in the Trinity Test, which was later also used in the making of atomic weapons in Los Alamos, NM.

Hanford was one of the three sites chosen because of the close proximity of the Columbia river. The river was used for its cold water which was used to cool down the reactors.

B Reactor

Los Alamos, NM

During WWII they needed a remote location that wouldn't be found by the enemy. This site was the location chosen to design and build the world's first atomic weapons. They used enriched uranium (Hanford) and plutonium (Oak Ridge)
