Introduction

In 2018, we experienced a year filled with tragedy and fear. School shootings have been occurring and normalized since Columbine. 2018 alone had the highest amount of school shootings in one year than in the previous years, and totaling to 94 incidents. In 2016 alone, there were nearly 39,000 gun deaths and then see it double last year. Not much was said until last year and actions were put in place and movement have become more vivid and one of the main topics in politics. Though 2018 was a fear-filled year, many advocates against gun violence have risen up and spoken across the nation. In addition, the speakers of the subject have continued to push for a solution by shedding light on the situation plaguing all across the nation.

April 20, 1999 in Littleton, Columbine

  • 12 students and one teacher killed

  • 23 others wounded at Columbine High School in the nation's deadliest school shooting.

  • Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, had plotted for a year to kill at least 500 and blow up their school.

  • At the end of their hour-long rampage, they turned their guns and themselves.

First Baptist Chruch

First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs

November 5, 2015 in Sutherland Springs Tx

  • Devin Kelley opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs

  • Killing 26 and injuring 20 more.

  • Kelly was shot by a civilian while fleeing. He crashed his escape vehicle, then committed suicide.

  • Kelley was prohibited from gun ownership after being court-martialed in the Air Force, however the FBI was not notified and he was still able to acquire firearms.

STONEMAN DOUGLAS HS

Stoneman Douglas High School

February 14 2018 in Parkland Florida

  • A former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who had been expelled for behavioral reasons.
  • Nikolas Cruz, brought a semi-automatic rifle to his old school. He triggered a fire alarm and shot the fleeing students and faculty.

  • The suspect, was arrested a distance away after he escaped in the crowd of students. He now faces charges for the murder of 17 people, and the attempted murder of 14 more.
