Sectors in the Sports Industry

Sport and leisure in the UK can be categorised into 3 sectors:

- Public

- Private

- Voluntary

Within these sectors, employment in the sport and leisure industry is usually available at either local or national level

The Public Sector

One of the largest providers of sport in this country

- Public sector facilities are usually owned by the local council or LA

They are open to the general public and provide service to the community, aiming to make sport more accessible for all.

The Private Sector

The Private Sector

This sector has grown massivley over the last few years. Private sector facilities are for members only and aim to provide an excellent service to people who pay an initial joing fee followed by monthly payments.

Thoughts on examples?

The Voluntary Sector

The Voluntary Sector

This is by far the largest sector in terms of numbers involved. It provides most of the sport in this country through volunteers who enjoy sport and awant to develop their club or team.

Examples include local clubs that meet in the evenings and/or at weekends.

(Football teams, Hockey Teams)

These clubs and teams generally cover their costs by collecting subscriptions (Subs). They do not normally own their own facilities but rent them from local councils or private organisations

Reasons why people choose to work part time?

They may be studying full-time, which is expensive, and choose to work part-time to help them finacially.

Some key sports roles are part time.

-Top level football officials can be PT

-Top level cricket umpires work part time but remain at the highest level

Full Time

Full Time

Self Employment

A self employed individual generates their own income, customers and partners and is responsible to themselves and any employees. They can trade with whoever they want.

Sports Therapists

Personal Trainers

Sports Psychologists

Sub Contractor

Other self employed individuals prefer to offer their product or services on a sub-contract basis.

Sub Contractor

For example, a Rugby League team may not wish to employ a full-time sports psychologist but may want to have one available for its players on a case-by-case basis. This means their players can still be treated by a reputable psychologist, but the club does not need to pay for their services when they are not being used.

Contracts

Zero Hour Contract

Disadvantages
