Roomba

Presentation

The Roomba

The Roomba has been design to clean your house.

It be can used when we don't have the time to do by yourself.

The Robot

IRobot

The Roomba is currently sold by IRobot.

IRobot is located in Massachusetts, in the USA.

It was created in 1990 by Colin ANGLE, Helen GREINER and Rodney BROOKS.

Company

iRobot headquarters in Bedford. Photographed by user Coolcaesar on June 20, 2009.

Characteristics

Characteristics

In This Second way, We will present all the functionality of the Roomba Robot.

You will be able to see 2 main parts in this section, the technical characteristics and the components of the Robot.

The Components

The Roomba Robot has so many components, but you will see it's pretty simple to understand.

Components

Virtual Charger Socket

Power Source

Power

Source

Robot, operates with a Battery made in Nickel Hybrid (NiHM).

The voltage of the battery is 14.4V and have a capacity for one cycle.

The battery Work's in DC (Direct current).

The only problem, is the battery take's too much time to refresh (16H).

To Increase the battery life, we can set the virtual wall in the shortest setting possible.

Circulation of Information

Roomba uses many ways to circulate information:

Virtual walls Lighthouses:

When the robot is set in virtual wall mode, in help of the lighthouses the robot can see invisible walls.

Wireless:

With Wireless, we can control

the Roomba functions , we can

also Schedule the Robot.

Computing

System

Buttons:

For Finish, we also have many buttons who can for example set the hour and the day.

The Materials

Roomba have so many Materials, we will make a little list:

Material

Structure

1-Virtual Wall sensor.

2-Battery.

3-The Bin button.

4-The Battery Charger socket.

5-The Button for set the clock.

6-The Schedule Button.

7-Clean Power Button.

8-The Wheels

9-The Dirt detect Sensor.

10-We also have the Spot cleaning button.

There's the main materials of Roomba,

but there are much more.

Actuation

To actuate the Roomba robot it's very simple:

-First you must refresh the robot battery, after

you must schedule your robot (when you buy the robot, it have already a program).

-you can put some virtual wall lighthouses.

if you have done this the robot must start when

planned.

Actuation

Sensors

We will present you the Roomba sensors:

The robot only have 3 main sensors.

Sensors

the sensor detects the invisible walls made be the lighthouses.

-virtual wall sensor

-Dirt Sensor

The sensor detect all type of dirty things in your home (dirt).

-Cliff Sensors

the last type of sensor are the IR sensors (infrared).

it detect an edge.

Manipulation

The manipulation is very easy with the automated robot!

Manipulation

After Schedule the Roomba, you just have to put the home base, in the end of cycle the robot must return "home".

-The advantage of the robot is the Roomba is very autonomous.

Locomotion

Can the robot clear all your home?

Locomotion

-Roomba can go in all the directions (360).

-the robot dodges all the objects;

-can also go in places who humans can't reach.

the only disadvantage is the robot can't go up stairs.

Technical Characteristics

Technical

Characteristics

Now, We will present the technical characteristics of the Roomba robot.

Power

-Roomba have a capacity of 1 entire cycle (3500mAh), it can increase if you set the virtual wall settings in minimum.

-The battery made in Nickel hybrid is very autonomous, it takes 16h to refresh, but the robot operates only 1 time each day.

The battery is able to support (380mA).

You can charge up the battery by putting the robot in the home base. The home base must be connect to 230V.

Size

-The robot isn't big, Roomba is about 40cm long and 10cm height.

-The Roomba weight is about 3Kg.

The size and the weight of Roomba depends of the different models.

Sustainability

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Social

Roomba respects the social pillar because it allows people to do something else while the robot is cleaning by scheduling. Moreover users don't have to clean themself.

Social

Environment

Sustainability includes an environmental pillar. Indeed, to be sure that the Roomba robot respects this pillar we will see its environmental impact, its energy consumption and if it is easy to recycle.

Environ-

ment

Environmental impact

Impact

  • The Roomba follows the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) directive.
  • It operates with electric energy which doesn't reject CO2.

Energy

Roomba robot's energy consumption is quite low.

Roomba takes 45 minutes to clean an average room with an electric power of 5,5 W.

So it consumes 4,1 Wh to clean one room.

Roomba allows to save energy compared to a traditional vacuum which consumes an average 700 W.

Recycling

Recycling

The vacuum robot is principally made with plastic for the external structure so it can be recycled but the battery is made with precious metals like nickel so the battery cannot be recycled.

Throw Roomba could pollute the environment due to its battery.

Economic

Roomba is relatively expensive for a vacuum but it's possible to save money thanks to its low energy consumption.

Economic

Operation

The Roomba robot operates thanks to its sensors to clean all the floor areas. Thanks to them it can detect the obstacles like the walls or the stairs.

The Roomba robot can clean when the owner wants to.

Operation

Cleaning

Cleaning

For clean efficiently, the Roomba uses different cleaning patterns.

The cleaning patterns are :

  • Spiraling
  • Wall following
  • Room crossing
  • Dirt detection
  • Cleaning modes
  • Spot mode

Roomba determines the optimal path thanks to its sensors.

Spiraling

In this path the robot uses a spiral motion to clean concentrated area.

Spiraling

Wall following

The Roomba follows the walls of the room for clean all the perimeter.

Wall following

Room crossing

Here it criss-crosses the room to ensure full cleaning coverage.

Room

crossing

Dirt detection

When the dirt sensor detects dirt, Roomba cleans more intensely in this area.

Dirt

detection

Cleaning modes

While cleaning, Roomba automatically calculates the room size and adjusts its cleaning time appropriately.

Cleaning

modes

Spot mode

Roomba will spiral approximately 3 feet in diameter and then spiral back to where it started, intensely cleaning a localized area.

Spot

mode

Setting

On the Roomba robot, it's possible to set the time and schedule the cleaning, for example it can cleans the room while you're out.

Here we will see how to set correctly the time and how to schedule the robot

Setting

Set the time

For set the time on the robot, first of all we have to press and hold the button "clock", then while holding "clock press the "day", "hour" and "minute" buttons to set correctly the time. To finish, release the "clock" button, if the time has been set Roomba will beep.

Time

Schedule

For schedule the Roomba we have to do like the time setting but instead of press and hold the "clock" button we have to press the "schedule" button.

Schedule

We do a example of schedule. Here the robot have to clean everyday except week-ends, the program start at midday except Wednesday, it have to start at 3.30 pm.

Example

A 'x' represent a hour and a '/' represent a half hour.

Conclusion

Conclusion

-To conclude about the Roomba robot, we can say that robot is very efficient for people who don't have much time or have health problems.

-The main components of the robot can be recyclable so it's ecologic.

-For people who have large floors and surfaces to clean in their homes, or people have animals it can be problematic.
