Chapter One

He became fond of his new friend Moishe the Beadle. Moishe would teach him more about Kabbalah. (28)

An officer walked in. He told them that they were in a concentration camp and they had two choices. Work or die.(64)

The Jews were marching in the freezing cold. That march turned to a run. They weren't allowed to stop. (110)

The violin boy started playing. He played on and on and on. He started playing Beethoven. They weren't allowed to play, but he still plays, plays until his last breath. (120)

The train stops and the SS officers order the prisoners to toss any dead bodies out of the train. (110)

The train at arrives. A hundred prisoners had gotten on the train only 12 get off. Eliezer and his father are among that dozen.(128)

Eliezer refuses to let his father sit down and rest because he sees the ground covered in bodies.(129)

Eliezer keeps him alive for days, but his father has dysentery. Eliezer no longer thinks his dad will survive.(133)

The SS officers begin to evacuate the camp and start moving thousands of prisoners out each day. After all prisoners are removed, the camp will be blown up. (138)

Eliezer gets food poisoning and spends a couple of weeks recovering in the hospital, hovering between life and death.(140)
