Lean originated as a normal perscribed cough syrup because of its side effects. Rappers started the wave of drinking lean making it popular among new generations and old. Example of rappers who actively sipped lean are Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, and Young Thug. Everyone knows about the double cup full of purple substance thanks to these rappers populizing the cocktail.
