The sociology of knowledge is concerned with the relationship of knowledge to a social base.

The objective of the sociology of knowledge is to identify and explain the social origins (ontogenesis), conditions of possibility, and processes of (re)production of our collective representations—(systems of) ideas, forms of thought, and modes of thinking.

As socially situated activities, knowledge and knowing are made possible by and shaped by the social organization of a community or society. Social institutions, like education, family, religion, media, and scientific and medical establishments, play fundamental roles in knowledge production.

the major sources of knowledge are tradition, authority, and observation and reasoning. Cultures differ with respect to how much they emphasize each source.
