Linking Verbs

Linking Verbs are words that link the subject to another work that describes the subject. They also help the main verb show the action.

Helping Verbs

Helping verbs are verbs that help the main verb in a sentence. Some helping verbs are also linking verbs.

Examples: 1. Jaimon is playing the violin.

Prepositional Phrases

Task 4

Sometimes there are words for people, places and things in sentences that are NOT the subject of the sentence. A prepositional phrase is a group of words that shows place or time. They are NOT the subject of the sentence. A prepositional phrase contains a preposition and at least one person, place or thing word.

Examples: 1. The ball rolled into the street.

2. The girl laid her coat across the couch.

Task 5

Words that describe or tell more about the subject are called adjectives. They may also be used to describe a noun.

Examples: 1. The big, brown dog barked at the cat.

2. The long, white limousine carried the

singers to their hotel.

Adverbs are words that add information about the action of the subject of the sentence. They show:

  • where
  • when
  • how
  • to what extent (how often, how much) the action takes place

Complex Sentences

A complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence, but a dependent clause cannot.

Let's look at some examples:

1. Because it was raining.

2. The football game was cancelled.

3. Because it was raining, the football game was cancelled.

4. After the storm, there were broken branches in our yard.
