The discovery of radioactivity

and its medical use today

What I will talk about:

-How was radioactivity discovered?

-What is it used for today??

Discovery:

-It was first discovered by the French scientist Henri Becquerel

-He was working on phosphorescent materials and placed phosphorescent salt on a photographic plate that was covered in black paper

-He noticed a blackening of the plate with uranium salt and it was even covered in black paper

-Later he discovered that it had nothing to do with phosphorescence, because it was caused by metallic uranium too

Discovery I

Discovery II:

-The type of radiation seemed similar to the X-Rays

-In later research Ernest Rutherford discovered radioactive decay and that the decay process results in a transmutation of the elements to another

-Then the decay could be differentiated between alpha and beta decay by the radioactive displacement law of Fajans and Soddy

-It was discovered that some elements have radioactive isotopes

-Pierre and Marie Curie discovered the new fully radioactive elements, polonium and radium

Discovery II

What is it used for today:

-first use of peaceful use of nuclear energy was with radium that was used for cancer treatment. It was the beginning of nuclear medicine

-Tracing where radioisotopes are used to track a chemical reaction in a body

-Nuclear reactors are devices that control fission reactions producing new substances and energy. The energy is released in form of heat. Water cools down the fuel rods and evaporates. The steam is then turns a turbine which produces electrical energy

-etc
