Manor System: (A SELF-SUFFICIENT ECONOMY BASED ON AGRICULTURE)

  • Manor: The lord’s estate (Lord’s house, church, workshops, cottages)
  • Lord provides housing, farmland, and protection.
  • Serfs tended the lord’s lands and other tasks to maintain the estate
  • Peasants owed duties (payments) to the lord
  • Bartered for goods not there, remember similar currency is no more
  • A Rough Life
  • Peasants taxed on all items, pay church tax (tithe)
  • Constant work, average life-35 years, and didn’t travel more than 25 miles from home
