Introduction

The history of water pollution has been going on for a little over 5 decades. It is a big problem in the world right now and is trying to be stoppd by the federal gouvernment.

As the Industrial Revolution progressed, water pollution became a major crisis. Water sources such as rivers, are constantly contaminated with toxic waste.

The Water Quality Act

The water quality act (WQA) of 1965 is a law evovled around water pollution. It authorizes the newly created federal water pollution administration.

Cause: encourage prevention of pollution as well as to attack the problem and to find more efficient ways of doing it.

Effect: The US finally put water pollution into action.

Cuyahoga river

The Cuyahoga river flows into Lake Erie.

Cause: Human sewage also caused water pollution to increase. It caused $100,000 worth of damage to the environment.

Effect: this river got so polluted that it caught on fire multiple times.

Point Source Pollution

Factories and sewage treatment plants are two most common types of point sources.

Effect: contamination that enters the environment through any discernible, confined, and discrete conveyance, such as a smokestack, pipe, ditch, tunnel, or conduit.

Cause: industrial wastes are also commonly discharged into rivers and seas. The sewages is causing major pollution in local lakes.

Largest Oil Spill

The largest oil spill was called the gulf war oil spill and was located in Iraq. Cause: there were 6,000-8,000 barrels that spilled in the persian gulf ocean. Effect: the pollution to spread and increase which made it harder for them to clean out.

Clean Water Act (CWA)

It's been 25 years since the Clean Water Act was put into action.

Cause: people were concerned that water pollution wasn't getting enough attention.

Effect: the governement adjusted the laws so it had water pollution involved politically.

Fresh Ground Water

Cause: fresh water was found in the ground.

Effect: digging up the ground too much costed too much money, and the African gouvernement didn't take the deal.

Second Largest Oil Spill

The second largest oil spill is called the Deepwater Horizon which is also referred to as the BP oil spill. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is an industrial disaster that began on the 20th of April 2010 and was located in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cause: the BP pipe was leaking oil and gas on the ocean floor about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana.

Effect: It is considered the second largest marine oil spill in history.

Canadian Drinking Water Problems

Cause: canada had drinking water hazards.

Effect: the water was so bad that it caused E coli in 8% in the water samples of many kinds.

Rio De Janeiro

Finally, in 2016, water pollution got much worse.

Cause: people were throwing garbage, furniture, and food into the water.

Effect: the athletes were at risk of being violently ill. They were told to keep their mouths shut as they were swimming/rowing.
