Analysis

(2.2.5) Dialectic discussion can be particularly effective online through electronic discussion boards, chat rooms, blogs, and other digital sites for the informal exchange of ideas.

The Analysis Game

Dwell with the object by observing it carefully and then describing it (or summarizing it) for someone else. Look at the whole; then look at each part. Consider the relationship of each part to other parts and to the whole. Open yourself to the object. Listen to it. Notice everything down to the smallest details. Don’t judge. Don’t interpret. Your goal at this stage is to write a description of the object for someone who hasn’t seen it.

1 person describes

1 person draws

Start the analysis by identifying patterns or disruptions in the pattern and noting puzzles. Note repetitions, contrasts, or oppositions. What patterns or parts are emphasized? What fits or doesn’t fit? What parts meet or don’t meet your expectations? What associations are triggered by various parts?

Apply Wittgenstein’s observation that “everything we see could be otherwise.” This process makes the familiar unfamiliar or unstable. For human-made artifacts, begin speculating why the maker made this choice rather than some other choice. Why is the tree in this poem a willow rather than a maple?

Next Steps:

Pose one or two key questions that could serve as the starting point of your analysis. Posing a question is the heart of your own knowledge-making process.

Use freewriting, idea mapping, or dialectic conversation to explore possible answers to your question. You are now looking for meanings, explanations, interpretations, and larger understandings. You are adding your voice to the conversation. You are wallowing in complexity.
