MAC = "Make-Up Art Companies"
In 1984, Frank Angelo and Frank Toskan could not find a cosmetic product that lacked "colors that would shoot well with photography". At their home in Canada they started the iconic brand of MAC.
Many of their first clients consisted of "fellow makeup artist, models, photographers, stylist and editors".
Finally, after the spread through word of mouth, Angelo and Toskan sold MAC at their first counter.
After ten years of being in business. Angelo and Toskan decided to give back to those suffering from AIDS. The MAC AIDS foundation was established!
$5.5 Million has been raised since '94.
1 lipstick = Hygiene and grooming kits for those in homes, public transportation for woman to go to doctors appt., rapid oral HIV test, 4 bags of food, pair of shoes for a child, etc.
2 lipsticks = safer sex kits for men and woman, food kits with non-perishable food.
8 lipsticks = home cooked meals for those in need,
Even with so much success both men decided to sell "51 percent of their business to Estee Lauder Inc., which planned to expand sales abroad, but the two men retained creative control."
With new eyes on the brand "freestanding stores and counters" were being opened left and right. Spreading the expansion of the diverse makeup line into new territory.
On January 12th, 1997 Frank Angelo passed away.
He had traveled to Florida to open a new store front. He died of "cardiac arrest in Coral Gables, FL".
Not long after Angelo's death Estee Lauder "acquired the remaining shares of the company."
He also help start the first MAC cosmetic classes to further education for future make up artist.
"John Demsey was named president of MAC cosmetics."
As the the leader Demsey he mingled the beauty culture with the fashion industry. The gave MAC a unique touch compared to the competing brands.
Frank Toskan then "launched a career in the philanthropy field".
Frank Toskan has had much success even after departing from the company that began his career. He is now apart of a foundation called "Toskan Casale Foundation" which launched in 2001.
He went on to open his own restaurant called "Impact Kitchen". Completly straying from the world of beauty. Toskan stated that "As I grew older, I realized how important health was. And most of who er are is obviously about what we eat."
He remains strongly passionate about the AIDS foundation that him and Angelo started. " We made sure that every penny went back to what it was intended for. We demanded that our retail partners didn’t take a mark up. Our sales staff never took any commissions on this product and so we sold it right through at 100 percent.”
Both Franks, changed the industry of makeup and how the world created master pieces with makeup cosmetics.
