When and where did Mexican Repatriation occur?

Mexican Repatriation started in 1929 and continued until 1939. The actual deportation of Mexicans happened throughout the United States but much of it took place in California where, at the time, many immigrants lived.

Who was involved in Mexican Repatriation?

Mainly Mexican/ Mexican American workers/ farmers were affected during Mexican Repatriation. A total of 200,000 farm workers were deported or forced to leave California. After they were deported, Midwestern white men and women took over their jobs. William N. Doak started this movement after President Herbert Hoover declared him Secretary of Labor in 1930.

Why and How

During the 1930's Great Depression there was a scarcity of jobs. As a result of this, Americans decided to blame Mexicans for holding jobs. Agencies also felt the pressure to exclude foriegn born applicants who were working for their companies. Eventually, the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) decided to question Mexican people and other "aliens" (a term white poeple used for people of a different race or ethnicity). This led to Mexicans having to leave the United States, some returning home with the fear of poverty, gang violence and insecurity.
