A toad is an amphibian with short legs and a short body. It has no tail and typically has dry "warty" skin. They have an average lifespan of 10-13 years. We have seven species of toads here in Canada.
In literature toads have been seen in many children's books such as "Frog and Toad" and "Toad on the Road".
In some cultures toads were considered to be evil spirits that assisted witches in their endeavors. They were also considered to be a sign of romantic jealousy. In Egypt however, they represented fertility.
There are many meanings for the word "toad" when being used as an insult. For example, some use it to describe a person with "toad-like" qualities such as being greedy or stern. It can also be used as a racial slur. In many prisons it is very common to hear inmates referring to indigenous or black people as toads.
In Othello the toad is mentioned in act 3 scene 3 line 272. In this instance the toad is being used to represent how much Othello wishes to not be in his present situation. He would rather be a toad than to stay with his cheating wife. He is implying that being a toad or even "breathing dungeon air" would be favorable to his current situation.
