Background
After the fall of Napoleon's empire in 1815, Belgium was annexed to the Netherlands by the Anti-French Alliance, which broke away from Dutch control in 1830 and became an independent kingdom. After independence the government decided to start stimulating industry to strengthen the country.
Before the Belgium revolution, the Belgium economy was mainly based on crafts and agriculture. After the revolution, however, Belgium began to accelerate its industrialization. These new industrial sectors created new jobs for the country and facilitated the development of trade and markets. These changes are also driving urbanization
Britain played an instrumental role in Belgium's independence. The reason why Britain did this was mainly for two reasons. On the one hand, Britain needed to expand its power in the European continent, and Belgium, which was located in an important position, could serve as a bridgehead to advance into Europe. On the other hand, Britain was always on the lookout for potential enemies, especially Germany and France, and Belgium was between Germany and France, and could be a pawn of the British Empire against Germany and France.
The industrial revolution in Belgium can be divided into three main phases: the proto-industrial phase, the first industrial phase, and the second industrial phase.
