The Hierarchy of Needs

Needs lower on the hierarchy need to be pleased before one can focus on the higher up

The hierarchy of needs is a theory of motivation which states that five categories of human needs dictate an individual's behavior.

Hierarchy of Needs: Theory of Abraham Maslow

Physiological needs

Safety needs

Love and belonging needs

Esteem needs

Self actualization needs

Maslow’s principles have found a place in the teacher-learner relationship. In order for learning to be successful, the teacher must first guide the learner to develop a healthy self-esteem and a sense of duty towards his own education.

Examples of the hierarchy in preschool aged children

Esteem needs: at the preschool age they strive for recognition and rewards. They look for ways to fill the need for positive attention and respect. they will do the thing they know will get others to appreciate their presence. An example of this is when a young child does something that gets others to laugh or smile, the child will continue doing the action over and over because he enjoys the positive attention.

Examples of the Hierarchy in children

Love and belonging needs: Preschool is when you start to learn how to make and maintain relationships with others your age. While their idea of friendship will change through time, it is at this time that they begin to play with others. during the end of preschool , children begin associative play, where two or more children interact by borrowing or sharing above is a good example of two girls sharing and becoming friends.

Physiological needs: Above is a group of preschoolers who are playing in the cold snowy weather. Children this age still rely on others for a large portion of their needs. Although, they are starting to understand some of their needs and how to fill them. One need that is a constant in cooler climates, is warmth. Children, at this age, know that if they are cold they should go inside or put a coat on. Children this age will need constant reminders

Reflection on the Hierarchy of needs

Reflection

I agree with Maslows theory. The hierarchy of needs is very much relevant, if you have to worry about, food, shelter, clothing, and safety, then you will be unable to truly focus on Self actualization. if you're just living in survival mode there is no room for self improvement, no time for fulfillment, or taking advantage of your strong points because you are simply just surviving on or below bare-minimum
