Stage 5

Let's see!

Investigation

Which of Claire's classmates cannot be correct?

Square centimetre (cm 2): a unit used to measure the area of surface. A square with side length 1 cm has an area of 1 cm2

Don't forget!

Vocabulary

-Area: The number of square units needed to cover inside of a shape.

-Perimeter: The distance around a shape.

You can do this!

Activity

I

Each learner uses 1cm2 squares to make a rectangle.

(a) What is the area of each rectangle describe by the children?

The coordinate grid shows positions in stream. Each square has an area of 1 cm2 and contains some nuggets of gold.

One more!

Activity II

The red rectangle has 3 row and 4 squares so it has an area of 12 cm2. The coordinates of its corners are (2,1), (6,1)1(2,4) and (6,4). There are 28 nuggets of gold in this rectangle.

You can collect nuggets of gold by making a rectangle anywhere on the grid using the coordinates pf the four corners.

(a). What is the area of the rectangle with corner coordinates (0,0), (0,1), (12,0) and (12,1)?

(b). How many gold nuggets are in the rectangle with corner coordinates (6,3), (6,5), (12,3) and (12,5)?

(c).Write the corner coordinates of a rectangle of 12 cm2 that collects 27 gold nuggets.

(d). Write corner coordinates of a rectangle of 12 cm2 that collects 37 gold nuggets.

(e). Write the corner coordinates and area of a rectangle that collects 11 gold nuggets.
