DCMU

DIURON

Chemical Structure:

DCMU Diuron is a chemical compound made of 9 Carbon, 10 Hydrogen, 2 Chlorine, 2 Nitrogen, and 1 Oxygen.

Chemical Structure

Current Uses

DIURON is a herbicide used in controling weeds in crops, stopping mold in some paints, and as a algecide in ponds and aquariums. It has very low dietary, residental, and group risks.

Current Uses

How does it work?

DIURON works by stopping some photons from reaching photosystem 2 and distrupting the electron transport chain. This slows and even stops photosythesis, leading to the death of the cell and plant.

Mode Of Action

What are the effects on humans and animals?

Diuron's effect on humanshad it banned in the past. It can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. It can also be traced to cause cancer causing symptoms.

Its effect on animals can vary from the depression of the nervous system, making the animal less aware and disorentated.

How Harmful is it?

Effect on Enviroment

DIURON is persistent in soil, water, and groundwater. Rainfall after the application of it leads to it polluting a larger area then expected. This can lead to more animals being effected through direct exposure or through eating plants that have been exposed.

The fact that DIURON has been banned in some places, like Europe since 2007, has been a win for eviromentalist. It has started being banned in USA and is partially banned in Australia.
