Introduction

Reactivty Series

Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to put copper through a variety of different trials to show how the law of mass conservation works. Throughout the experiment the isolated physical system (amount of energy) did not change but the form did.

Terms & Defintions

-b

Law of Conservatin: Mass is maintained throughout chemical reactions and physical transformation so it is neither created nor destroyed.

Precipitate : The formation of a solid due to a chemical reaction from two aqueous solutions combined.

Materials Used

Discussion

-0.5g Copper Wire

-10 mL Nitric Acid

-8 mL Sodium Hydroxide

-5 mL Sulfuric Acid

-0.5g Zinc

-20 mL Hydrogen Chloride

Materials and Procedure

- 2 Graduated Cylinders

- 3 Beakers

- A stirring Rod

- 2 Weigh Boats

- A Filter

- Litmus Strip

-Hotplate

- Forceps

Solutions to Errors

Procedure

a

Possible Errors

c

1. 0.5 g copper wire was weighed and cut into small pieces and combined with 10mL nitric acid

2. The mixture was heated until the cpper wire dissolved

3. Once cooled, 8 mL sodium hydroxide was added 1 mL at a time. The pH of this solution was tested using litmus paper.

4. 5 mL of sulfuric acid was added, until the chunks had completely dissolved

5. 0.5 g of zinc was added and the solution sat until the copper was seperated.

6. 20 mL of hydrogen chloride was added

7. The solution was filtered using filter paper and a vacuum. Forceps were used to remove the copper from the filter paper.

8. A weigh boat was used to find the mass of the copper

9. Percent recovery was then calculated.
