Map of Gilgamesh

Uruk

This is Gilgamesh’s homeland where he is king. Gilgamesh built magnificent temple towers that surrounded his city with high walls.This is a place of comfort for him and a place where he can always go back to.

Battle With Humbaba and bull of heaven

Gilgamesh tricks the monster into giving away his seven "radiances" by offering his sisters as wife and concubine then he kills Humbaba.

Inanna gets the bull of heaven to kill Gilgamesh but Gilgamesh killed the bull.

These battles show Gilgamesh’s power and ability to conquer what is in his way. This emficises that he is two-thirds god and one-third man.

Death and Dream

Enkidu had a dream of death and death, death is a house of dust were all the people eat dust and clay is their meat.

Enkidu the is sickened to be by the gods, he hates that he died in bed rather than on the battlefield.

Gilgamesh sets off into the wilderness as Shamash had told the dying Enkidu he would. One night while he is sleeping out in the wilderness he awakens, surrounded by lions, He draws his axe from his belt and starts to slaughter them.

Mysterious Mountains of the Man Scorpions

The Great mountain was an obstacle that Gilgamesh passed through on his journey after leaving the Cedar Forest. There were Many Scorpions that guarded the gates.

Encountering Shamash

Gilgamesh meets shamash by the sid eof the sea and she does not beleive that he is Gilgamesh. He tells her that it is him and that he is on a quest. She then tells him to go find utnopustom.

Siduri by The Sea

Siduri keeps a tavern by the sea. As Gilgamesh approached her, she asked him why his face was wrought, and his skin dirty. Gilgamesh then explains that he is grieving the death of a friend. She welcomes Gilgamesh into the tavern to clean himself up. He does so. She told him he needed to follow Shamash, but the only way to do so was to go to Urshanabi, Utnapishtim’s boatman, knows how to navigate the treacherous waters.

Journey With Urshanabi

Gilgamesh set off to find Urshinabi. He does find him, but not knowing, Gilgamesh destroyed Urshanabi's boat's equipment. Urshanabi told Gilgamesh to go cut poles form the forest and then they would attempt the journey. Gilgamesh did as he was told, and they set off to cross the treacherous waters.

The Great Flood

The Great flood story was told by Utnapishtam. The story goes that the world was full of people, and the god Enlil says the uproar of humans is too much for sleep. So he decides wipe the slate clean with a flood. The only reason Utnapishtam survivied is because of the god Ea warning him of such an event.

The Test for Immortality

Utnapishtam understood that Gilgamesh was in search for immortality, so he came up with a test. This test was to stay awake for six days and seven nights. This would give the gods a reason to grant him immortality. Gilgamesh tried but failed, while he was sleeping Utnapishtam's wife baked a loaf of bread for each day he slept. The symbol of the seven loaves of bread was the slow decay of life as the days pass.

Gilgamesh Obtains Plant of Youth

Gilgamesh was told by Utnapishtim that there was a magical plant that could restore one's youth. He said that the plant grew at the bottom of the Euphrates river. So Gilgamesh tied rocks to his feet to gather the plant. Once he obtained it, he continued on his journey back to Uruk. However, along the way a serpent smelled the plant and snatched it away from Gilgamesh, which through Gilgamesh into turmoil.

Gilgamesh Returns to Uruk

Gilgamesh and Urshanabi travel together back to Uruk. When they arrive, Gilgamesh shows Urshanabi the walls, he shows him its brickwork, fields, clay pits, and orchards. Urshanabi is impressed, then Gilgamesh continues to rule Uruk.
