By occupying a liminal space as an art form, graffiti, particularly that on the West Bank Wall, embodies the inherent tension between aesthetics and activism within the concept of protest art.

What's different?

Defining "Graffiti"

Graffiti is words or drawings, scratched or scribbled on a wall. Graffiti as a modern art form originated in the late 1960s.

  • Palestinian Flag
  • Faces covered with keffiyeh
  • Black & white
  • Kid with slingshot
  • No buildings in background (just rubble of wood/concrete)
  • Murals vs Graffiti: consent

  • "oppositional speech acts"

  • graffiti as simulacra

Banksy's "Armored Dove of Peace",

The West Bank Wall

The symbol of the dove for peace with an olive branch in its beak is juxtaposed with its armoured vest and target on its chest.

The wall officially began construction in 2002 after the Second Intifada, stretching over 700 km upon completion.

It still undergoes periodic construction/modifications till today.
