What is the Manus Arm?

The Manus Arm is an assistive robot that helps people who are disabled and confined to a wheelchair.

What tasks does the robot perform? What human function or task does this robot simulate?

It can help people with disabilities who are confined to wheelchairs and need help grabbing items. Human functions it can perform are repair, transfer, cleaning, and health. It basically takes the place of a human caregiver.

The robot is used on a wheelchair. It has a large degree of freedom that needs masterful control and is capable of working in various workspaces and unstructured environments.

The Manus Arm is multifunctional. It is capable of picking up various objects off the floor and shelves, and is also able to hold objects

The robot is taught to perform its tasks by the programmers from the company in which the robot was built in. The robot also learns simple tasks that the person would need on a daily basis over time.

How is the robot taught to perform its task?

The MANUS Arm has an infrared sensory box, distance sensors, and force torque sensors. It also has grip sensors and linear position sensors. These sensors help it to perform its tasks without error.

Some advantages of using the MANUS Arm are that it helps people who are disabled reach and pick things up, and can be used in any environment. Some disadvantages are that it requires skill to maneuver and the process between shifting through menus can be tiring and frustrating.

The impact this robot could have on its audience is very helpful, because it can be constantly helping the person it is assisting, and it requires no salary. So it can severely impact the person’s life, because they can now use an arm even if their arms are not useable anymore.

This particular robot creates jobs for people who manufacture these arms. The arm needs to be coded and built, which creates jobs for people that make them.

What type of jobs/careers can this robot create to provide employment for people?

This robot can be improved in the future by making it simpler to use for those who are cognitively challenged. It can also be changed to perform more daily functions like brushing teeth and combing hair.
